About NNLS

The Norfolk and Norwich Law Society is a local law society.  As you may be aware, there is a national Law Society with a head office in Chancery Lane London, to which all solicitors belong.  This looks after the national interests of solicitors.  The Norfolk and Norwich Law Society however is an entirely separate entity, and looks after the interests of solicitors on a more local basis.

In many areas of the country, groups of solicitors have formed their own local law societies.  These are all very different, some are very large and some very small.  The Norfolk and  Norwich Law Society, with between 400-500 members, is of middling size.

The functions of the society have changed over time.  In the past the social side of the society was far more important, although even today the annual dinner is an important item in the local legal calendar.  However for our members perhaps one of our most important functions is the local training courses that we run, generally in the early evening at the Assembly House in Norwich.  We also have a few social events, such as an annual quiz and dinner, and we  join with the Faculty of Law at the University of East Anglia in arranging the annual Law Lecture.  Our committees also submit papers from time to time responding to consultations on various items of legal reform.

The Norfolk and Norwich Law Society was incorporated in 1892 so we have quite a long history.  The society is run by a committee which meets quarterly, and there are also various subcommittee on various aspects of law and practice.
